Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the current status of the project?
A: The project is currently in active development. We plan to release an alternate start demo shortly and will follow it up with the entirety of Act 1 of the game as a vertical slice.
Q: Why isn’t the project called Van Buren?
A: The name “Van Buren” is a registered trademark owned by inXile Entertainment, which prevents its use in the project’s title. In addition we are very happy with “ The New West” as a title as we feel it fits the setting excellently.
Q: How does Fallout: New Vegas relate to The New West, are they in the same continuity?
A: Fallout : The New West functions as a direct sequel to Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout : Tactics. Fallout: New Vegas and its events are not strictly canon to our game. The project exists in a separate continuity due to New Vegas’s significant divergences from the original Van Buren concepts, for example Hoover Dam. Concepts introduced in later Fallout titles may still be considered canon unless they directly contradict our continuity.
Q: Will the mod use vanilla New Vegas Mechanics?
A: Yes. The project will have some new or slightly different mechanics, but these will be tutorialised in the game. It will generally be assumed that any prospective player has at least a passing knowledge of New Vegas and its mechanics.
Q: Are you accepting voice work?
A: Always! Have a look at our discord.
Q: How strictly will you be following the design documents?
A: Many people in the community have a misconception about Van Buren as if it was a fully developed game that simply was never released, but this is far from the truth. The Van Buren documents are messy and contradictory due to the game being a last ditch attempt to save Interplay, and not only that, a few of their concepts have already been executed in specific ways by New Vegas. This has the effect of us not only having to finish the design documents for several parts of the game, but also having to cut or change things that just aren’t feasible. This project strives to be as authentic as possible to the design documents, but ultimately we are a completely different team of creatives finishing a project that was started more than 20 years ago.
Q: Do you need help on this project?
A: We currently have a great team of developers, but help is always appreciated! We are especially looking for scripters, 3d modelers, 2d artists, and animators.
Q: Can I donate to make the project release faster?
A: The project is not currently accepting donations. However, contributors who have previously commissioned relevant assets and wish to make them available to the team are welcome to do so.
